How an ATS reads your resume
It never sees your design. It sees the text.
An applicant tracking system (ATS) is the software companies use to collect and filter applications. When you upload a resume, it pulls the text out of the file and tries to sort it into fields: name, email, phone, job titles, employers, dates, education and skills. Recruiters then search and filter on those fields.
That extraction step is where good resumes go wrong. A scanned resume has no text at all. A two-column layout can be read sidebar-first, so your skills land under the wrong heading. An icon in place of the word "Email", or a heading like "My Journey" instead of "Experience", can leave a field empty.
This checker shows you that extracted text directly, so you are not guessing. For freshers, internships count as experience and a Career Objective counts as a summary. If you are writing your first resume, start with our resume format for freshers, which has two scored samples.
Free check vs full score
Want a score out of 100?
The check above works on raw text, so it can tell whether a section exists but not whether every role has dates or how many skills you listed. For that, sign up free and upload the same PDF. We parse it into editable fields and score it on 19 weighted checks totalling 100 points, covering contact fields, role depth, dates, skills coverage, education and bullet quality. The score recomputes as you edit.
When a bullet is missing a number, the AI coach asks you for it instead of inventing one. When you export, we read the PDF back and show which fields survived.
