The short answer

  • Layout: one column, reverse-chronological, one page.
  • Order: header, objective, education, skills, internships, projects, certifications.
  • File: a text PDF named Firstname_Lastname_Resume.pdf.
  • Leave out: photo, date of birth, marital status and the declaration.

Structure

The section order for a fresher resume

Recruiters and applicant tracking systems (ATS) both read top to bottom. As a fresher, your strongest proof is usually your education and what you have built, so those go high on the page. Experienced candidates lead with work history; you do not have to.

  1. 01

    Header

Name, phone, email, city, LinkedIn. GitHub or portfolio if relevant.

  2. 02

    Career objective or summary

Two or three lines: your degree, your strongest proof, the role you want.

  3. 03

    Education

Degree, college, years, CGPA or percentage. Class XII and X below it.

  4. 04

    Skills

6–10 specific skills, grouped if you have many. Tools and technologies, not adjectives.

  5. 05

    Internships

Role, company, dates, 2–3 bullets with numbers. Move above Skills if it is your strongest section.

  6. 06

    Projects

2–3 projects with what you built, the tools, and one result.

  7. 07

    Certifications

NPTEL, Coursera, NIIT, vendor certificates. Name, issuer, year.

  8. 08

    Achievements and activities

Ranks, competitions, positions of responsibility. Optional.

  9. 09

    Languages

Optional. Useful for customer-facing and regional roles.

If you have a solid internship, move it above Skills: real work beats a list of tools. If you have no internship, make Projects your main section and write it the way you would write a job.

Samples

Two fresher resume samples, scored

Both samples are fictional and built in our editor with the single-column Modern template. The scores below are computed live from each resume by the same 19-check rubric the builder uses: contact fields, role depth, dates, skills, education and bullet quality. There is no AI in that score, so the same resume always gets the same number.

Section by section

How to write each section

Header

Your name on the first line, then phone, email and city as plain text. Use a professional email (firstname.lastname@…), and add LinkedIn, plus GitHub or a portfolio for tech and design roles. Do not put contact details inside icons or images: an ATS may read nothing there.

Career objective

Two or three lines, no "I". Name your degree, one piece of proof, and the role you want. Here are four you can adapt:

B.Tech / engineering
Computer Science graduate with a six-month backend internship and three projects in Java and React. Looking for a software engineering role where tested, maintainable code matters.
B.Com / commerce
B.Com graduate with three months of hands-on GST filing and bank reconciliation in Tally Prime at a CA firm. Seeking an accounts executive role.
BBA / MBA fresher
MBA (Marketing) graduate who ran a ₹40,000 campus campaign budget and a two-month sales internship. Looking for a business development or brand role.
No internship
BCA graduate who built and deployed two web apps used by classmates, with strong SQL and JavaScript. Looking for an entry-level web developer role.

Education

Degree and specialisation, college, years, and CGPA or percentage. Below it, Class XII and Class X with board, year and percentage. Campus drives and IT services companies often screen on these, so a fresher should include them. Skip school-level details once you have a couple of years of work.

Skills

List 6–10 specific skills: languages, tools, software and methods ("Tally Prime", "SQL", "Figma", "GST filing"). Copy the exact names used in job postings you are targeting, because ATS matching is literal. Leave out adjectives like "hardworking"; show those through your bullets instead.

Internships and projects

This is where most fresher resumes are weakest. Each bullet should start with an action verb and include a number: how many users, how much faster, how many clients, what percentage. Compare:

Weak

Worked on a website for college fest. Responsible for backend.

Strong

Built the registration backend for the college fest in Node.js, handling 2,400 sign-ups over 3 days.

Only use numbers that are true. An interviewer will ask where "improved performance by 40%" came from. If you do not have a figure, describe the scope instead: the number of users, pages, records or teammates.

Certifications and activities

Add certifications that relate to the role, such as NPTEL courses, cloud or vendor certificates, or Tally and GST courses for commerce roles. Positions of responsibility (club lead, placement coordinator, event head) and competition results show initiative; one line each is enough.

Leave it out

What not to put on a fresher resume

  • Photo

Not expected for private-sector jobs in India, and image-heavy headers can break ATS parsing. Add one only if the job posting asks.

  • Date of birth, marital status, father's name, religion

These belong on a biodata, not a resume. They take space and are not used to shortlist you.

  • "Declaration" with signature

"I hereby declare that the above information is true…" is a biodata habit. Drop it for private jobs. Some government forms ask for it; follow the form.

  • Two-column or graphic templates

Many ATS read columns in the wrong order, so your skills can end up under the wrong heading. Use one column.

  • Skill bars and star ratings

"Java ★★★★☆" means nothing to a recruiter and nothing to an ATS. List the skill and prove it in a project.

  • Generic objectives

"Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation" fits everyone, so it says nothing about you.
